As has been said millions of times by now, we're deep into playoff-push time. Although its that time of year the injury bug could care less, as it struck some playoff teams over the weekend. The biggest causualty to injury is easily Compton's Carlos Lee. Lee broke his finger on saturday night as he was hit by a pitch early in his game. Lee was easily the keystone to the Cougar offense as he has been scalding since late june (batting .390) and ended his season as the NL(MLB) and CL RBI leader. A truly crushing blow for the Cougars, as manager Billy Laux has lamented, who have had to contend with other injuries and DL assignments recently like John Maine's trip to the DL with a strained rotator cuff :-/, we're yet to get a full grip on how seriously this will impact them. Compton is not the only one who is battling the injury bug. In fact, some may argue that the Playland Dragons have been fighting a tougher injury spree, as u could call it, all year long with important players going down to injuries. Currently, Playland are dealing with a couple of big DL stints from Joba Chamberlain (rotator cuff tendonitis) and David Murphy (strained knee) that occured earlier this week along with nagging injuries to players Rick Ankiel and Griffey Jr. This seemingly no big deal for Playland when you look at the injuries they've had to deal with throughout the year. The most notable of those injuries are A-Rod, Rfael Furcal, Juan Pierre and Roy Oswalt. Crenshaw has fallen victim as well as they've lost big producers. Wildebeest Orlando Hudson under went season-ending wrist surgery leavin a hole at second base that Crenshaw hopes Jeff Kent can fill. The other ailments theyre trying to fight through are Billy Wagner's DL stint due to a strained left forearm and Wakefields recent trip to the DL due to stiffness in the back of his shoulder, which is a bit worrying. And the final big injury concern comes from St. Lucie as Carl Crawford, rumored to be moved before the trade deadline, has taken a trip to the DL and not with the hamstring pain that he has recently been experiencing again, as he did earlier in the saeason, but with a problem with a tendon in his right middle finger, its been said that he will return in 2-3 weeks. Other teams fighting some ailments include the Redbirds as their premier closer Brad Lidge is fighting, "shoulde sluggishness." some fear its a tired arm, he has two days off but how long can the Phils afford to keep him out of commission?
In other news on the week, there was a move, international style. It seems like the Caballos couldn't take the seperationalist nature of many Catalonians so they moved to calmer waters.... MUCH calmer waters. They made the unexpected and at times baffling move to, of all places, Minot, North Dakota; along with a team-name change to the magicians, which seemed fitting as they basically vanished from Barcelona. Minot is located in the prairies of north-central North Dakota. The town was established in 1886 as construction was stopped for the winter on a railroad and workers settled their, and the rest is history. As is per usual for most northern-prairie baseball teams, the Magicians will hav to battle the cold sum how as April and September are waaay below many of the other avg temps in other cities across the UFBA. Manager Richard Sune has seemingly wormed his way out of rumors that the magicians are working on a charm with help of Hogwarts' Professor Flitwick that'll create a Super-Dome with retractable roof, rain simulator and hot tamales stand. One can only hope for now....
